Types of Eyebrow Embroidery: Misty Brows, Microblading and Combination Brows
In Singapore, “eyebrow embroidery” is used as an umbrella term for several brow techniques. The three main types are misty (powder) brows, microblading hair strokes, and combination brows. They differ in how the brows look, how they are done and which brows they tend to suit.
Types of eyebrow embroidery at a glance
| Type | How it looks | Often chosen when |
|---|---|---|
| Misty / powder brows | Soft, shaded, like lightly filled-in brows | Brow hair is sparse, or you usually wear brow powder |
| Microblading | Fine, hair-like strokes | You want visible hair detail and have some brow hair |
| Combination brows | Hair strokes at the front, shading through the body and tail | You want hair detail with a more defined finish |
Misty, powder and ombre brows
Misty brows use soft shading to create a filled-in, powdery effect rather than individual hair-like marks. An ombre design usually moves from a softer front to a more defined tail. “Korean misty brows” generally describes a soft, natural-looking shaded finish.
Misty brows can look subtle or more defined, depending on the design. They are often chosen when brow hair is sparse, uneven or light.
Microblading (hair-stroke brows)
Microblading uses a hand-held tool to create fine strokes that imitate individual brow hairs. Some studios create hair strokes with a machine instead, which is a different technique even when the result looks similar.
Hair strokes look most natural when they sit alongside some existing brow hair. Ask to see healed hair-stroke work, not only photos taken straight after treatment, as fresh strokes look much crisper than healed ones.
Combination brows
Combination brows bring hair strokes and shading together, typically with strokes at the front of the brow and shading through the body and tail. Ask which parts of the brow would get strokes, which would be shaded and why that plan suits your brows.
Eyebrow embroidery vs microblading: are they the same?
Not exactly. Microblading is one type of eyebrow embroidery. Misty brows are another. So the real choice is not “embroidery or microblading”, but which finish suits you: hair-like strokes, soft shading, or both.
Which type suits oily skin?
On oilier skin, fine hair strokes can soften and blur more over time. For that reason, shaded or combination brows are often suggested for oily skin. Your skin, existing brow hair and preferred look are all assessed before a technique is recommended.
What about names like 6D or nano brows?
Names such as “6D”, “nano” and “misty” are used differently from studio to studio. Ask what the name means in practice, which tool will be used and what the healed brows are expected to look like.
How to choose
Bring your usual brow pencil or a photo of your everyday makeup. Discuss:
- Your existing brow hair and the areas you want to define.
- Your skin type and any previous brow tattooing.
- How strong or subtle you want the healed result to look.
- The proposed shape and colour before treatment starts.
- The review and touch-up process.
The same design can look different on a different face, so choose based on your own brows rather than someone else’s photo.
What if I already have brow embroidery?
Existing pigment can limit the shape and colour that are possible. If your old brows have faded unevenly or turned red, orange, blue or grey, eyebrow colour correction may be needed first. Read why eyebrow embroidery changes colour to understand what happens.

Is microblading the same as eyebrow embroidery?
Microblading is one type of eyebrow embroidery. It creates fine hair-like strokes by hand, while misty or powder brows create soft shading and combination brows use both.
