Why Does Eyebrow Embroidery Turn Red, Orange, Blue or Grey?
Old eyebrow embroidery often changes colour as it fades. Brows that started brown can turn red or orange, while very dark brows can turn blue or grey. This is common, especially with brows done several years ago, and in many cases the colour can be corrected.
Why eyebrow embroidery turns red or orange
Brown brow pigments are usually blended from several colour components. As the pigment breaks down in the skin, these components do not always fade at the same rate. When the darker, cooler parts fade first, the warmer red and orange tones that remain become more visible.
This is why brows that looked a natural brown when healed can look reddish or orange a few years later.
Why eyebrow embroidery turns blue or grey
Very dark or black pigment, particularly when it sits deeper in the skin, can look cool through the skin because of how light passes through it. Over time this can appear blue, grey or ashy rather than dark brown. It is more common in older brow work that used very dark colours.
What else affects how brows change colour
- Sun exposure – UV light speeds up fading.
- Skincare – exfoliating products such as retinoids and acids used on or near the brows can fade pigment faster. See skincare to avoid after embroidery.
- Laser and light treatments near the brows, such as some facial or hair-removal treatments.
- Skin type – oilier skin can cause brows to blur or fade differently.
- How the pigment was placed – the colour chosen, how much was used and how deep it sits.
- Time – all cosmetic pigment changes gradually over the years.
Can red, orange, blue or grey brows be fixed?
Often, yes. With eyebrow colour correction, unwanted tones are balanced with a carefully chosen corrective shade before the final brow colour is built up. A warmer tone is used to soften grey or blue, and a cooler tone to tone down red or orange. The shape can be redesigned at the same time if it no longer suits you.
Most corrections take 1–2 sessions, depending on the condition of your existing brows. Correction cannot make very dark, dense old brows lighter by adding a lighter colour on top. In that case the old pigment may need to be lightened first, which is assessed at your consultation.
How to help new brows keep their colour
- Once healed, protect your brows from strong sun.
- Keep exfoliating skincare away from the brow area.
- Tell your facial or laser provider that you have brow embroidery.
- Book touch-ups when advised rather than adding more pigment too often.
- Choose a colour that suits your skin tone and hair, not just the darkest shade.
